Let’s talk about coffee. There are so many ways to drink coffee at home — and you don’t even need one of those fancy, Earth-hurting K-cup things.
Instead, go for the brewed kind, the French press, the Chemex, the Aeropress. Not to mention espresso and cold-brewed coffee. So many options!
Really, there is absolutely no reason for you to be paying $5 for a pumpkin spice latte or iced caramel macchiato when you could make your own at home — and a better one at that.
Pick up a few of these coffee essentials and be your own barista. I have faith in you. But first, coffee…
Here are the coffee essentials you need to get started with making better coffee at home:
Coffee makers
Coffee can be brewed in so many different ways. You can go with a regular brew coffee maker, or if you are ready to level up or take some more time with your morning cup, go for a more manual method.
Coffee maker
A traditional coffee maker is a must for many kitchens. You can set it and forget it — and keep it warm for a couple of hours after it brews. We have had this exact coffee maker for several years and love that it has a built-in grinder for fresher coffee.
French press coffee maker
If you have a little more time in the mornings, a French press is a great way to go. French press coffee is smooth and velvety, and it’s a great way to make a brunch special. You can also use it for tea. This is the one that I have — I love that it comes with a storage container for fresh ground beans.
Chemex coffee maker
Ready to try pour-over coffee? It’s a smooth, less bitter brew of coffee. I got my husband this Chemex coffee pot for our anniversary last year, and he loves taking the time to build the perfect cup every morning. We also have this gooseneck kettle which is easier to use than a regular stovetop kettle.
Cold brew coffee maker
If you like iced coffee, making cold brew coffee is even better than just chilling hot-brewed coffee in the microwave. I have this jar cold brew maker. It’s so easy to brew up smooth, not-bitter coffee in the fridge.
Espresso makers
If you are more of a latte person, then an espresso maker might be more your speed. You can easily make this strong, thinner, richer grind of coffee at home with one of these espresso machines:
Espresso pot
The Moka Pot has an iconic design and is great for making this Italian coffee at home right on the stovetop.
Automatic espresso maker
If you want all the pleasure of a cinnamon latte at home but don’t need all the bells and whistles of a fancy espresso machine, a Nespresso machine like this one might be just the thing for you. It uses recyclable espresso pods — you can mail the spent pods back to the manufacturer.
Classic espresso maker
If you want barista-level espresso at home, then this all-in-one espresso machine would be perfect for you. I used to have one like this, but we ran out of countertop space at our last place and I am still so sad I gave it up.
Coffee beans
Freshly ground coffee beans make the best coffee, so you need a few accessories to grind and measure to make the most balanced cup ever.
Coffee grinder
We have this exact coffee grinder and use it every day for our Chemex coffee! It’s so easy to grind, and the lid doubles as a measuring cup to toss into the coffee maker.
Measuring scoops
A coffee scoop helps you to measure out the perfect amount of grounds to put into the coffee maker. You can use a regular measuring spoon set, but there’s something so nice about having one dedicated to only coffee.
Coffee canister
A cute coffee canister will look nice on your counter, but is it airtight so that your beans and grounds don’t lose their freshness? Might be time to upgrade to an airtight container like this one!
Craft coffee beans
If you love coffee, you know that good beans make all the difference. I personally use and love Trade for getting fresh-roasted coffee beans from small coffee shops all over the country delivered right to my door.
Cold brew bags
Cold brew coffee is less bitter and smooth. If you like iced coffee, it’s the way to go, but it can get messy. These pre-measured pouches from Grady make for easy cleanup.
Cream & sugar
If you like cream and sugar in your coffee, this next set of accessories is for you! From sugar to syrups to sweet cream, there’s definitely a way to upgrade your coffee bar.
Milk frother
A hand-operated milk frother fits neatly in a drawer and is at the ready to fluff up the cream for your coffee at any moment.
Sugar dispenser
If you like sweet coffee, you need a functional yet beautiful sugar container to keep on your coffee bar. I keep one of these on hand for guests.
Coffee creamer pitcher
Have you ever tried making homemade coffee creamer? It’s the best! And a great way to save money. Keep it in a jar just like this one so it’s ready to go in the morning.
Syrup dispenser
If you love making your own coffee syrups, keep them in dispensers to pump into your coffee each morning. Try vanilla syrup or caramel syrup.
Spoons
If you make coffee every day, why not invest in a cute spoon to stir with every day? This one rests on the rim of your mug.
Coffee to-go
Your coffee goes wherever you do? Same here! These accessories are just for you:
To-go mugs
These are my favorite mugs to take coffee in! My only complaint is a small one: They keep the coffee so warm that I often have to add an ice cube to get it to a good temperature for me. That’s why I started making coffee ice cubes, so the joe doesn’t get diluted! Once it’s at the right temp, it stays that way for hours — perfection!
Coffee cozy
You’d add a koozie to a beer, why not add a cozy to a coffee? These handmade mug warmers are ideal for chilly mornings.
Coffee warmer
If you drink coffee at work, you might like a coffee warmer. Especially if you’re the type who always forgets to drink it! (Me — I am that type!) You can also use it for hot tea or hot chocolate, of course, too.

real talk – i just learned how to use a french press a few months ago, but it has completely changed my coffee game. also, i have no. 9 but haven’t quite figured out how to use it. finally, i recently discovered the youtube channel “peaceful cuisine” (i think you might like it?) and he makes a pumpkin spice latte that looks scrumptious.
