There’s nothing like walking out the door for a big trip and getting that sinking feeling that you forgot something. Or worse, getting to your destination and realizing you did forget an important item! I can be kind-of a last-minute person when it comes to packing, so it’s not at all unusual for me to run back inside because I forgot a sweater to wear on the plane or buy a new toothbrush when I get there. These things happen.
It’s because of this tendency that, over the years, I’ve become reliant on packing lists to help me make sure I forget absolutely nothing. The key to a good packing list is trial and error. Review it a trillion times and add anything the second you think of it. Cross off things as you organize them, then use a copy of your list or another color pen as items make their way into your luggage.
If you’re road-tripping or camping, packing lists can come in handy for you too. Plan ahead to make sure you know exactly what you need to take and add it to your list. Regardless of your mode of travel, save your list inside your suitcase for the next trip. You can build on it for years to make packing easier each time!
My packing list is lengthy, but each trip is different. I find it helpful to come back to the same template each time and reconfigure my options and to build it and make it better each time I travel. Today I’m sharing it with you. Download a FREE copy of my ultimate packing list. Click here or on the image below!
Some more packing tips? I always try to start packing at least three days before my trip. Plan for unexpected weather, both slightly warmer and colder than you expect. I’m also always careful to pack my toiletries in zip-lock plastic bags. The air pressure on planes can cause them to explode — trust me, I’ve been there! My mom (who is a very, very good mom for this reason) always advises me to pack extra undies in your carry-on in case your luggage, heaven forbid, gets lost. (Unfortunately, that’s come in handy more than once.)
I hope you get some good mileage out of my ultimate packing list this summer! If there’s something it’s missing, let me know and I’ll keep it updated. Bon voyage! // susannah
