Your ultimate guide to red cocktails

When it comes to red drinks, not all of them are created equal. Many can come packed with artificial flavors and fake colors that threaten a stain you’ll never get out.

Not to worry! You can achieve this rosy glow in plenty of ways that don’t involve overly artificial ingredients. Homemade simple syrup, like grenadine or strawberry, can give your drinks the right hue — plus a touch of sweetness. Certain types of liquor, like Campari, result in a ruby red sipper.

When to serve these stunning cocktails? Valentine’s Day is the obvious choice, but don’t stop there. Cheer on your favorite team with a drink in their colors, celebrate a patriotic holiday or enjoy one for a themed party.

Quick tips for hosting

When it comes to colorful cocktails, here are a few of my favorite tips:

  1. Fresh is best. From your ingredients to your garnishes, fresh fruit and herbs will give you the most color (and flavor).
  2. Keep your theme going. Red garnishes, like strawberry slices, cherries or even red rock candy will make your drinks shine.
  3. Allow for customization. If you’re hosting a crowd, setting up a cocktail bar is an easy way to let everyone craft their perfect drink.
  4. Offer a non-alcoholic option. Mocktails provide the same fun flair as a cocktail without any booze, making them perfect for all ages. The cranberry lime mocktail is perfectly tart while a cherry mocktail has no season. Or try the pomegranate mocktail for something with bubbles.
  5. Big batches are your friend. Craft your drink in a quantity that keeps you out from behind the bar ahead of your get-together — just don’t add anything bubbly until you’re ready to serve!

Serving suggestions

Red garnishes can take your drinks over the top. Sliced strawberries, cherries on a cocktail pick or even red rock candy add to the look. You could also use a red simple syrup, like raspberry, to rim your glass — just watch for drips as it could end up looking like a spooky Halloween sipper instead!

Since most of these colorful cocktails use fruit to achieve their ruby color, complement the sweetness with garnishes of fresh herbs. Mint or rosemary are great choices and add not only fragrance but a touch of flavor. Flower ice cubes are a romantic addition — use something like red roses to stay on theme.

Consider the occasion when you’re working on the menu, and add food to the red theme when you can. For a romantic dinner, penne rosa with parmesan crusted chicken is easy enough, yet impressive. Add some chocolate covered strawberries or red wine brownies for a touch of sweetness.

For a game day watch, go with something more casual. Think easy to share foods like pizza pinwheels, air fryer chicken wings or totchos.
