As a native North Carolinian, I can attest that barbecue is a staple of everyday life. I can’t tell you how many pig pickings, festivals, cookouts and barbecue joints I’ve been to in my life. (I can tell you, though, that I probably opted for fried chicken over pulled pork for the first half of my life. I can admit now that I was wrong.)
My friends Amanda Aileen Fisher and Paul Bright of EDIA/Every Day Is an Adventure published a map featuring all things N.C. barbecue. The Great NC BBQ Map is a gorgeous and comprehensive guide to barbecue eateries across the state. Folded up, the map fits in any glove box and would be the perfect road trip companion for a barbecue lover.
One lucky reader will win a map signed by the creators plus a set of stickers to mark your map and a magnet that says, “I got my pork pulled in North Carolina.”
Any North Carolinian can probably tell you how they like to eat this slow-smoked goodness. There’s Eastern-style — finely chopped from the whole hog with tangy, vinegar-based sauce and served with sweet white slaw. And then there’s Western-style or Piedmont-style — sliced or coarsely chopped pork shoulder with sweet tomato-based sauce and served with tangy red slaw. And oh, the sides! Hushpuppies, fries, baked beans, collards, mac & cheese… And The Great NC BBQ Map tells you where you can find them all.
Much of people’s barbecue preferences depend on where they grew up and how their family ate it. For me, I prefer the Piedmont/Western-style, but I like Eastern too. Don’t tell anyone, but sometimes I’ll even break all the rules and eat it with both sauces. I think it’s because I started liking barbecue later in life.
The Great NC BBQ Map would be an amazing gift this holiday season. Maybe you’ll be inspired to set a new year’s resolution to try all 400+ restaurants, shacks and eateries on the map in 2015. My family and I have sure been enjoying using this map to try out some new spots in our area.

Linda | Brunch with Joy says
This is one lovely map and I’m dying to travel to NC now. 🙂 My favorite way to eat BBQ…hmmm probably dry rub bbq or light sauce.
Susannah says
In total agreement, Linda. Too much sauce hides the barbecue!
Meghan says
NEED THIS. I like my BBQ smothered in sauce.
Susannah says
I do like lots of sauce on occasion, Meghan! It really depends on the day and the barbecue and the sauce!
Mary says
Susannah, I love this idea! I like BBQ on a bun.
Susannah says
Yes, me too. Barbecue is meant to be eaten as a sandwich.
Stephanie Bullins says
What a cool map! I grew up in the Piedmont, so I’ve (thankfully) always been able to eat great East and West ‘cue. As a kid, I loved a good saucy West barbecue sandwich, but now my favorite way to eat it is without the bread and smothered in a good spicy vinegar sauce!
Susannah says
Me too, Stephanie! I love mixing the two sauces but that always gets me weird looks from staunch fans of Western and Eastern. Must be the Piedmonter in me!
Lisa Snedeker says
