Creative mason jar gifts anyone can make

I’ve always loved the charm of mason jar gift. They feel homemade and thoughtful without being fussy. Mason jars are easy to fill in batches, which make them perfect for handing out to friends, neighbors or as a hostess gift during the holiday season.

You can easily include kids in adding the contents of the jars for many of these gifts, which is a nice touch for sharing with teachers, too.

Some of these jars can be tucked away in the pantry for weeks, so they’re ready to go in a pinch. Whether it’s an infused vodka, a bright syrup, cookie mix or a cozy spice mix, each one feels like a small but meaningful celebration in a jar.

Best jars and supplies to use

The size of your jar makes a big difference in how the gift comes together. Small jars are perfect for spice blends or jams, while larger ones hold layered mixes, infusions or bigger batches of syrup.

Glass jars are usually the better choice since glass keeps flavors pure and looks more polished, but plastic jars can work for dry ingredients if you’re short on options.

For recipes that need to be shelf-stable, stick with proper canning jars, lids and basic canning supplies to keep everything safe and fresh.

Wrapping and presentation tips

While tucking jars into a gift bag works fine, the beauty of mason jar gifts is that the jar itself doubles as the wrapping!

Presentation of mason jar gifts can be as simple or dressed up as you like. Add a ribbon tied around the middle or rim for instant polish, or secure a square of fabric under the lid for a homespun touch.

Gift tags make it easy to jot down what’s inside, or you can print out a label for a more finished look. (I have printables for hot apple cider spice mix labels and cocktail infusion kit labels.)

If the gift isn’t ready to enjoy immediately: For say, a cookie mix that still needs eggs, milk and vanilla, tuck in a tag or note that lists what’s inside the jar along with simple instructions for finishing it and/or using it, so the recipient doesn’t have to guess what to do.

You can also customize the jar with a unique lid that suits what’s inside, such as a pour spout lid for a syrup or infused vodka.
