In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar and water. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool completely before using. Makes about ¾ cup. (See the full brown sugar syrup recipe for storage tips.)

Blackberry Bourbon Smash
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the blackberries, lemon juice, brown sugar syrup and mint leaves together.
4 to 5 blackberries, 1 ounce fresh lemon juice, 1 ounce brown sugar syrup, 10 to 12 fresh mint leaves
Add the bourbon and ice. Shake vigorously.
2 ounces bourbon whiskey, Ice
Strain into a rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with 2 blackberries and a sprig of mint.

Brown sugar syrup: This recipe makes about ¾ cup of syrup — more than you need for one drink. Store leftovers in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to one month. Find the full recipe at feastandwest.com/brown-sugar-simple-syrup/.
Storage: Best served fresh. Muddled components don't hold well overnight.
Batching: To make a pitcher, multiply all ingredients by the number of servings and muddle the fruit in batches. Add to a pitcher over ice and stir well before serving.
