Easy Guacamole recipe
Whipping up a batch of homemade guacamole is a must when I am hosting guests, and I’ll often make it just for myself as a healthy snack or even a light dinner.
Not to mention, this perfect dip is an excellent appetizer, party snack or garnish for a burger or nachos. No self-respecting Super Bowl party is complete without it!
My best advice is to making good guacamole is to buy your avocados a few days in advance and wait until they get squishy enough. One of the worst mistakes you can make with this classic guacamole recipe is not using ripe avocados. Trust me, I’ve been there.
The avocados have to be somewhat firm yet squishy, though not rotten, or they won’t mash well. You can also use the paper bag trick — enclosing an avocado with a banana in a paper bag traps ethylene gas, which helps to ripen it faster.
Whatever you do, don’t forget to make the most perfect strawberry margaritas to pair with this chunky guacamole. There’s no better way to eat guac!

Substitutions and Variations
I make guacamole a little bit differently every time, depending on what I have on hand. It’s very easy to tailor to picky guests, so be creative and make any substitutions you need:
Want a stronger onion flavor in this classic Mexican dip? Use red onion instead of white onion!
You can really use an tomato that you want. I prefer roma tomatoes, but you can grab beef steak tomatoes or even cherry tomatoes and dice them up.
Lime juice gives the best flavor to guacamole, but you can always swap it out with lemon juice if that is all you have on hand.
How to Make this Guacamole Recipe
Begin by removing the avocado pits and remove the avocado fruit from the skin.
To make it easier to mash, you can cut the ripe avocados into 1-inch chunks, but you don’t have to if your avos are ripe enough.
Scoop them into a large bowl and then use a fork or potato masher to mash the green creamy avocados.
Then add in the lime juice, bell peppers, tomato, onion, cilantro, garlic, salt and pepper.
Stir well to combine, but try not to over-mash the great avocados!
Garnish with extra cilantro leaves and a few lime wedges.
Then serve with chips or veggies and enjoy!

What to serve with Guacamole Dip
Make a flight of tasty dips and serve fresh guac alongside queso fundido and cilantro pineapple salsa. You can also serve guac on a juicy burger — if you’ve never tried this, you absolutely should!
Nacho dip would be a wonderful dish to pair with fresh guac too.
Don’t forget the drinks! Serve up this delicious vegan guacamole recipe with coconut margaritas, a Corona sunrise or a ranch water cocktail. And of course, frozen margs are tasty too!
Tips & tricks
Here are some tips and tricks for making this recipe:
- Make sure you finely dice all vegetables to make this simple recipe turn out absolutely perfect. Too large of a dice, and your veggie guacamole will be too chunky and difficult to scoop.
- I highly recommend you purchase fresh garlic and then mince it yourself. You can buy minced garlic in a jar at the grocery store, but the flavor of freshly minced is just so much better!
- For the best results, make guacamole dip right before you plan to serve it. Then you won’t have any worry that it could brown before being served!
FAQ
There are a few tips and tricks to successfully storing leftover guacamole. Add a bit of extra lime juice and store it with the avocado pits. Yes, you read that right! The avocado pits will actually help keep the guacamole from turning brown. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat within a couple of days.
Lemon juice and lime juice both help the avocados in guacamole stay green. The pits also help! However, if your fresh guacamole starts to turn brown it is likely still edible. Oftentimes, it is only the top layer that is brown so you can just scoop it off if it looks less than desirable to eat! But if your old guac has turned brown, toss it and make a fresh batch instead.
