Roses are red, violets are blue, celebrate love with a cocktail or two!

Okay, that was cheesy. But the sentiment is not.

If you’re planning a Valentine’s Day dinner (might I suggest this easy pasta dish followed by chocolate covered strawberries), you should make sure to plan some drinks to go along with your menu.

You could always go the bottle of wine route with dinner, but a cocktail to start the night or to enjoy with dessert is always a winner.

Strawberry Mimosas just make brunch rosy! Whether you make them for a weekend with gal pals, a wedding shower or a celebration like Easter, Mother's Day or Valentine's Day, these sparkling pink mimosas are the perfect way to toast the day ahead. (via feastandwest.com)

Tips for picking a Valentine’s Day cocktail

  1. Pick your date’s favorite spirit. This is an easy one, but find out what they prefer: gin, vodka, tequila, wine, champagne, bourbon — there are so many options to make a drink they’ll love. When in doubt, go for something vodka-based as it’s more of a clean slate that can handle other flavors.
  2. Make it colorful. Red or pink are surefire colors for drinks that are perfectly festive for Valentine’s Day. Berries are a great way to naturally color your drinks, or you could go for a rosy spirit like Chambord or even rosé wine.
  3. Pick the right glassware. Nothing says fancy like getting out the pretty martini glasses you never use.
  4. Dress it up. Add some red or pink embellishments to up-level your drink. Rose petals, paper straws, fresh berries, even a cute heart-shaped drink stirrer are all great ways to garnish your drinks.

I rounded up 16 lovable libations you can enjoy with your sweetheart for a Valentine’s Day date night. Or any time, for that matter!

Any of the drinks below would be a great way to say “I love you.” I hope you and your love try something new and find a new favorite! Which one will you try first? // susannah
