I’m co-hosting a combined bridal shower/bachelorette party this weekend. The bride requested the guests play games at the party, which made me realize it’s been absolute ages since I played a good card game. My family didn’t play a lot of games growing up, so it’s always a treat for me to get out cards or a board game with friends.
I love thinking games like Set and word games like Scattergories and Scrabble, but I’m also a huge fan of group games like Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity. Really, as long as everyone is laughing and having a good time, I’m a happy camper. I recently came across the Monikers card game by Alex Hague on Kickstarter, and it seems like just the kind of card game I need to add to my collection tout suite. With a tagline like, “A dumb party game that respects your intelligence,” how could it not be perfect?
Based on the public domain game Celebrity, Monikers’ cards feature names of and descriptions for historical figures, fictional characters and famous animals. In each round, players describe or act out the name on their card to the other players. As a game, it seems to have a lot of potential for creativity and laughter, two of the most important ingredients in a game night.
The cards themselves have a gorgeous, clean aesthetic with a bright color scheme and custom illustrations. From the Kickstarter page, you can even download and play with a printable, beta copy of the Monikers card game. I’m looking forward to backing this campaign and playing Monikers with my friends one day soon! // susannah
